Our zoo is home to a wide range of species, including the UK’s only sloth bears and one of the country’s largest collections of crocodilians, and is a recognised favourite visitor destination.
JOB DESCRIPTION
We are currently seeking a dedicated and experienced Zoo Manager to lead and further develop our team, ensure and enhance the welfare of our animals, oversee the upkeep and improvement of our existing animal facilities, and play a key role in the future planning and development of the animal collection as both a visitor attraction and a conservation resource.
Key Responsibilities:
Animal Welfare & Management: Oversee the daily care, health, and welfare of all animals in the zoo, with a particular focus on the Category 1 species, ensuring their environments are safe, clean, and enriching.
Team Leadership: Manage and inspire a team of keepers and support staff, fostering a positive work environment, providing training, and ensuring adherence to best practices in safe animal care and management.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure the zoo operates in full compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, including animal welfare standards, health and safety regulations, and relevant zoo licensing legislation.
Paperwork & Inspections: Manage all zoo-related paperwork, including animal records, health and safety documents, and inspection reports. Prepare for and oversee zoo inspections, ensuring all areas meet or exceed standards.
Public Engagement: Work closely with our education and events teams to develop and deliver engaging and informative programs for visitors, enhancing their visit and their understanding and appreciation of conservation and animal welfare.
Emergency Response: Develop and implement emergency procedures for animal escapes, health crises, and other potential emergencies, ensuring the safety of both animals, staff and visitors.
Collaboration: Work collaboratively with veterinary staff, conservationists, and other zoological collections, regionally and internationally, to promote animal welfare and conservation efforts.
Qualifications & Experience:
Significant Experience: A minimum of 10 years experience in a zoo management or senior keeper role, with direct experience managing Category 1 animals. Firearms License &
Training Knowledge of Regulations: Comprehensive knowledge of modern zoo practice, licensing, and inspection processes.
Strong Work Ethic: A dedicated and proactive approach to work, with the ability to handle the physical demands and varied hours required in zoo management.
Leadership Skills: Proven experience in leading and developing teams, with strong interpersonal and communication skills, including basic computer skills.
Attention to Detail: Meticulous in record-keeping and compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to think quickly and effectively in emergencies and under pressure.
